FAQ

What if I can’t get onto the roof of my building?

Don’t worry, you can still take a creative picture in front of your community building. Think of signs you can make, shirts you can wear or other ways to make your picture stand out!

Why “community” solar?

Often people can’t go solar because of the high upfront costs, because they don’t own their building, or because their roofs aren’t suited for it. A 2008 study by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory found that only 22 to 27% of residential rooftop area is suitable for hosting an on-site photovoltaic (PV) system after adjusting for structural, shading, or ownership issues. Community solar projects offer an incredible opportunity for anyone to invest in a local solar project to create jobs, reduce emissions and build community while getting paid back.

What if I don’t know anything about community solar?

Don’t worry, we’ll provide you with all the tips and tools you need to organize your gathering. Once you sign up, we’ll send you to our Community Solar Toolkit and personally contact you to help you organize a fun and successful event.

What makes a successful community solar project?

Generally, successful community solar projects are led by a committed group of people who are working to put a solar project on an organization that has a strong history of engagement with the community. Additionally, the leaders of the organization need to be excited about the idea of helping their building go solar and be willing to devote some time and effort into making the project happen.

What type of gathering should I hold?

The exact type of gathering is entirely up to you, we suggest hosting something fun like a rooftop dinner, a potluck, a picnic or a happy hour. Like we said earlier, if you can’t get onto your building’s roof, you can still hold a fun event inside or in front of it! Think of the top 10 people whom you’d like to invite and what type of activity they’d be most likely to enjoy.

Who should I invite to my event?

Everyone! You should invite your friends, family and colleagues--keeping in mind that probably less than half of the people you invite will be able to make it. While we’ll help publicize your event on our website, this is mostly for solidarity purposes. The people most likely to show up are those who know you personally.

Why should I take a picture?

By collecting pictures of people across the country in front of the buildings they want to occupy with clean solar power, we will send a powerful message to our politicians and the media that we want clean, accessible energy, in our communities, now! Send your picture to theteam@solarmosaic.com.
