People's Grocery
8.6 kW of community solar in Oakland, California
People’s Grocery is the second organization to participate in the Oakland Solar Mosaic. They are a food-justice organization working to build and support a local food system through leadership development, community engagement, and advocacy. A few years ago, if you were hungry for healthy food in West Oakland, you were probably out of luck. With over 53 liquor stores and few grocery store options, West Oakland residents were often forced to eat processed, poor quality, and overpriced foodstuffs from convenience stores. People’s Grocery formed in 2002 to improve the quality of life for West Oakland residents by providing access to fresh and nutritious food.
People’s Grocery focuses on building relationships between community members and decision-makers, which in turn leads to projects and campaigns that improve the health and wealth of the community. These projects include a greenhouse enterprise program and garden at a low-income housing development, cooking classes, a subsidized weekly “Grub Box” to families facing financial challenges, and an alliance between organizations working to improve food retail in Oakland. Check out more of their amazing programs here.
With your help, People’s Grocery will lead West Oakland into a more sustainable future--one powered by solar energy and nourished by locally-grown, affordable food. People’s Grocery shares their West Oakland building with Beliveau Engineering Contractors, a locally-owned and operated business that serves Oakland. Thank you to everyone who helped People's Grocery go solar!
